INET Oxford Executive Director Eric Beinhocker spoke at France’s annual summer gathering of economists, policymakers, and media in Aix-en-Provence. Hosted by Le Cercle des Economiques, the event gathers 4,000 people and 230 speakers from 30 countries for 3 days of intense discussions on challenges faced by France, Europe, and the world. Eric spoke on the “Future of Social Europe” and argued that the EU faces four interlinked crises: 1) the euro, 2) Brexit, 3) migration, and 4) democratic legitimacy. He proposed that a multi-track EU - outlined in his INET Oxford working paper - could provide a more flexible structure for dealing with these difficult and simultaneous challenges.
