The INET Oxford Summer Research Meeting 2024 took place on 13 June 2024 at the Oxford Martin School.
The event included research updates from INET Oxford's four programme teams as well as two panel discussions on 'Accelerating the Energy Transition' and 'A year of Elections: What can New Economic Thinking contribute?'.
Executive Director Eric Beinhocker reviewed the academic year at INET Oxford and gave examples of just some of the highlights:
- Doyne Farmer’s UK book launch generating 20 separate media articles, podcasts and events, including feature interviews in The New Scientist and New Statesman.
- Sir David Hendry’s 80th Birthday Climate Econometrics Conference at the Oxford Martin School marked by a tribute keynote presentation from Jennifer Castle on 'The Founding of a Discipline'.
- John Muellbauer's Green Land Value Tax design, which has gained traction in the wider New Economic Thinking Community as a means to tackle inequality in housing.
- Lukas Lehner & Max Kasy's guaranteed employment scheme pilot achieving international recognition and generating policy at the EU level.
- Sugandha Srivastav's research on George Cove and solar energy capturing international media attention.
Over the past academic year, INET Oxford's 143 researchers and staff have added 73 publications to our online database, including notable contributions such as a novel epidemic-economic model and analysis of banking regulations. This year's work brings INET Oxford's total number of publications to 1,353.
The centre has held 70 affiliated events over the past 12 months; including INET research seminars, Complexity Economics Seminars, Environmental Economics Seminars, Climate Econometrics Seminars and several keynote lectures at the Oxford Martin School. The Complexity Economics and Economics of Sustainability Programmes have held their own well-attended away day events.
The vibrant and collaborative office atmosphere at Manor Road Building during the academic year saw 78 cakes consumed at 'Complexi-teas', 250 pizzas eaten at INET Oxford Pizza lunches, 4,800 sustainably sourced and biodegradable coffee capsules consumed, and an estimated 1,800 Celebrations eaten from Dorothy Nicholas' Complexity Sweetie jar!
