This research provides a novel methodology to estimate which countries are more likely to thrive in the fast-approaching green economy. With cleaner technologies and greener (environmentally-friendly) products set to become increasingly important, we draw on economic complexity approaches to measure and analyse countries’ capabilities to produce green goods and foster competitive green industries. By developing a new dataset of traded green products (goods with environmental benefits), we examine the complexity of production knowledge underpinning each green product and identify countries that are presently well placed to become leaders in the green economy. We also illustrate how countries might re-orient their existing industrial structure to become competitive in green products and identify countries that could be well positioned to make such structural changes in the future.
