Abstract:

Geological carbon storage (GCS), encompassing both carbon capture and storage (CCS) and engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR), is essential for achieving and sustaining net zero. Despite Australia's advantageous position - including vast geological storage potential, extensive technical expertise, and a history of early CCS investment - a credible pathway for scaling GCS has yet to be established. Australia currently lacks 2030 and 2050 targets for GCS, a structured deployment pathway, and a robust policy framework to support its development.
