Abstract:
Financial Services in the City of London (‘the City’) has a long and distinguished history, including support for major corporations such as the East India Company; financing of the ships, armies, and infrastructure required for the Empire; the development of worldwide insurance through Lloyd’s of London; and the creation of the London Stock Exchange. Two World Wars and their aftermath were successfully financed during the twentieth century. The current activities of the City continue to underpin the UK economy, providing services to governments, companies, and individuals on a worldwide basis.
