Biography

Carla Coburger is a monetary economist and PhD candidate at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, where she is part of the “Economic and Monetary Sovereignty in West Africa” research project within the AfricaMultiple Cluster of Excellence. Her research focuses on the evolution of money and the dynamics of monetary orders — from the historical development of monetary systems to contemporary debates around central bank digital currencies and distributed ledger technologies. She is particularly interested in how global monetary transitions affect sovereignty, hierarchy, and power.

Carla previously worked with Rebuilding Macroeconomics at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) in London and has been involved in interdisciplinary initiatives at the Santa Fe Institute and the Fields Institute. She is a co-author of The State of Capitalism (Verso, 2023) and her academic work has appeared in the Journal of Law and Political Economy and the Journal of Risk and Financial Management.
