Social Mobility & Economic Opportunity

Whether a child born to a disadvantaged family can achieve prosperity in adulthood is a central indicator of a healthy and inclusive socio-economic system. Our team produces new evidence on how and why social mobility varies across high-income countries, with particular attention to upward mobility from poverty. Using a mix of administrative and survey data, we study how childhood exposure to poverty shapes later-life outcomes, and which policies are most effective at breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
